    Dear Deacon Nguyen,

Paul’s message is perfectly fitting for the Labor Day holiday we observe tomorrow... doing everything in God’s name for God’s glory. For those of us who are believers, is there any other way?
“Whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God.”
    ~ 1 Corinthians 10:31
The early Christians recognized the dignity of work, giving it a special meaning. Their worship was known as “liturgy,” a word derived from the Greek for “public service” or “work.” So for the early Christians you could say the world was their workplace! Their mission was to invite others through prayer and witness into life with Christ.

Fast forward... and we see that the celebration of labor in the United States is a time-honored Catholic tradition with Masses, parades, and speeches. As his predecessors did, Pope Francis advocates passionately for justice in the workplace and the dignity of all labor. His message is especially important today because of the seemingly endless desire to accumulate and consume—regardless of who may be hurt or marginalized along the way.

Dinh, as you pause to observe Labor Day tomorrow, know how grateful I am for the example you have set over the years through your own work. You have used your talents well in praising God. Then please say a prayer with me for the workers and families left behind: those looking for work, those sidelined by illness or disability, and all those impacted by the hardship of unemployment or underemployment. May they and everyone have the opportunity to live fully and contribute to a just world, fashioned in the image and likeness of God.
Father Raymond J. Finch, M.M. Sincerely yours in Christ,
    Father Raymond J. Finch, M.M.
Prayer for 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time
    Lord of all creation
    having finished all Your works
You rested on the Seventh day
and gave the Sabbath as Your gift
that men and women might also rest
    and find refreshment in You
    and Your Word.

You, who made humankind in Your
image and likeness, have given us the power,
privilege, and dignity to be Your
    co-creators in this world.

Bless the work of our hands,
the fruit of our labors, and
    the products of our imaginations.

May we never consider any job
too lowly or small that we cannot
raise it up to you as a sacrifice
    of praise knowing that everything
we do in Your name becomes
    good, noble, and true.

    In Jesus’ name.

    Amen.
    ~ Father Joseph R. Veneroso, M.M.

    Dear Deacon Nguyen,
We don’t always compliment ourselves, but let me say something important about you: You are an extraordinary missioner!
“Each of us is a mission to the world, for each of us is the fruit of God’s love.”
    ~ Pope Francis
Each time you express your faith by caring for someone, you are being Christ-like in ways Our Holy Father Pope Francis says are the most meaningful: You are a healing presence and witness to God’s eternal love.

Maryknoll is celebrating the Extraordinary Month of Mission in October—the vision of Pope Francis to share the joy of our faith in every and any way we can.

In ordinary ways, our missioners are doing extraordinary work: caring for the sick, counseling the troubled... educating children and working beside lay people to build parishes and the practice of our faith. Your gift to Maryknoll makes sure that all this and more will continue.

I’m sure your own parish will have observances and events throughout October meant to deepen your mission spirit among friends and family. As you pray for God’s blessings, I wish you a meaningful and deeply rewarding call to extraordinary mission! And thank you for coming to mission with Maryknoll. You are our partner twice over: in prayer and in service to the people of God, especially the poor.

Thank you for giving generously. May God bless you for the extraordinary missioner that you are.
Father Raymond J. Finch, M.M. Sincerely yours in Christ,

    “It’s now or never”

    Dear Deacon Nguyen,

Today’s reflection is the final one in our Kingdom living series. Allow me to review what Kingdom living is and what it is not.

It’s about being poor in spirit—humble, admitting we need God. It’s about investing in godly things—making Jesus our treasure. And it’s about not responding to evil with more evil, but rather with active compassion.
“And people will come from the east and the west and from the north and the south and will recline at table in the kingdom of God. For behold, some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last.”
    ~ Luke 13:29-30
Jesus teaches the most important lesson about His Kingdom in today’s verse. If we want that great prize at the end of our journey here, we must acknowledge who He is and live as He lived. Many will come from all corners of the world to partake of the feast at the Kingdom table in the “new heaven” that is described in the Book of Revelation. The “chosen ones” and those who sit in places of power will be last, and the Gentiles, the little ones and the downtrodden will be first.

If we seek spiritual poverty, realizing our weaknesses and need for God, we live in the Father’s Kingdom. If we serve God and not money, we are Kingdom dwellers. And if we stop fighting fire with fire, but rather use “weapons of love”, we reside in God’s Kingdom.

Dinh, our challenge now is to live every day as Kingdom dwellers on the inside God’s of will, because “...those he predestined he also called…those he called he also justified…those he justified he also glorified.” (Romans 8:30) We are predestined, called, justified and glorified. Now, let’s go live like it!
Father Raymond J. Finch, M.M. Sincerely yours in Christ,
    Father Raymond J. Finch, M.M.
Prayer for 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time
    Your Kingdom come, Lord,
to all who hunger for justice
that Your power may be revealed.
    Your Kingdom come, Lord,
to all who thirst for truth
that Your presence may be proclaimed.
    Your Kingdom come, Lord,
to all who yearn for mercy
that Your name may be praised
    by everyone everywhere.

Even in the midst of suffering and evil
yet will I offer a sacrifice of praise
    knowing that the smallest prayer
is heard above the clamor of war
and the smallest act of kindness
    echoes to try heavens
    in the courts of God
    the Most High.

May Your Will be done on earth
this day and every day of my life
that I may join with all Your angels
and saints in singing Your praise
so all people on earth may pray
    one prayer with one voice:
    Your Kingdom come!

    Amen.
