    Dear Deacon Nguyen,

Investments—we all make them in some form or another.

Some investments are wise, some are not...but Kingdom investments are always wise!

A good financial advisor first analyzes a portfolio; he lets you know if you are at low, medium or high risk with your present investments. He asks questions about your goals and dreams. When Jesus is our advisor in all matters, and when we invest everything in Him, our “spiritual portfolio” grows!
“For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.”
    ~ Luke 12:34
Our Lord speaks to these investments—matters of the heart and soul—in Luke chapter 12, stressing the importance of acknowledging who He is and why He came. There just isn’t any neutrality in His strong statement about how He will acknowledge to His Father only those who acknowledge Him.

Do we place God at the center of our universe? When we strive to be more Christ-like by reading and studying God’s word, and by praying and doing good works daily, we prioritize our treasures and place Him at the center of our universe. This is Kingdom living in its most elementary yet richest form!

Dinh, what does our “spiritual portfolio” look like? Is Jesus, our greatest treasure, residing in our hearts? If He is, then it’s easy to give of ourselves to others, because it is Christ in us who advises our actions. When we put ourselves first, we are only condemning ourselves to be alone. In God’s economy, when we put others first, we always have a lot of company…and we’re always in a bull market!

Prayer for 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time
One hour in prayer to You, Lord
fills my day with Your mercy.
One day offered to Your Kingdom, Lord
fills my soul with Your peace.
One act of service to others, Lord
fills my life with Your presence.

Help me, Lord, to order my days aright,
You who are the creator of time,
that whatever I do or say
may bring You glory and praise
and each moment of life become
a constant prayer to Your goodness.

For who are we, that You care for us?
Or our children, that You are mindful of us?
Yet You have created us in Your image
and came among us as One who shares
our humanity, our time, and our life
and for this we offer constant thanks.

    Amen.
    ~ Father Joseph R. Veneroso, M.M.
