    “Happy Mother’s Day”
View this email in your browser
    Dear Deacon Nguyen,

What gift is greater than the gift of life? I can’t think of one.
“Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes in me will do the works that I do, and will do greater ones than these.”
    ~ John 14:12
Today we celebrate Mother’s Day, one of the most significant and memory-rich holidays in our calendar. Like you, I can’t help but recall the many celebrations in my home as I was growing up. Making Mom Queen for a Day gave us as much pleasure as it gave her! So we honor mothers everywhere today and ask God to bless them in their work of human creation—and for nurturing a new generation of believers, faithful to the Gospel and the abundance of life in Christ Jesus.

In fulfilling their responsibilities to loved ones, mothers teach us an important life lesson: The work of creation belongs to each of us. As people of faith, each of us is charged with giving life, caring for life, and celebrating the abundance of life we talked about last week—the abundance we find in Christ Jesus.

As we celebrate Moms everywhere today, let’s remember that each of us was called in Baptism to witness our faith as life-givers—no matter our title or station. Being a life-giver involves prayer and sacrifice to be sure. But the rewards are so great. I remember the women of the Altiplano in Peru where I served in mission. They were often the ones who passed on our faith to their progeny and our Church grew strong. I saw something similar in other parts of the world, too. Women and mothers are often the driving force of our faith.

Dinh, I salute every woman of faith on Mother’s Day and I thank God for you, too. I know you have nurtured many a soul along their journey of faith and that makes you a life-giver—just like all the mothers we remember and pray for today.
Father Raymond J. Finch, M.M. Sincerely yours in Christ,

    Father Raymond J. Finch, M.M.
    Prayer for Mother's Day
God bless the woman who gave me life
    who nursed and nourished me
    with faith, hope, and love
who trained and taught me to
    walk, talk, pray, and sing
and above all who was always
there for me, on my side
and who always believed in me.

God bless the woman who healed my hurts
who dried my tears and made me smile
protecting me from the storm and
    calming all my fears.

God bless the woman who helped me
bless God for all the good things
    given me through the one
    special woman I call Mother.

    Amen.

    Dear Deacon Nguyen,

Thank you for the generous support you have shown to the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers through the years. I’m truly grateful for it. Gifts from donors like you help enable what Pope Francis considers the essential work of Mission: proclaiming Jesus Christ crucified and risen.

Today, that work faces the great challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Maryknoll Missioners remain at work with people living in impoverished communities in Asia, Africa and Latin America who have limited means to fight this scourge. Here at home, retired missioners face the particular risks older people bear in this outbreak, as do the staff who care for them. In fact, 10 of our older priests and Brothers have already passed onto eternal life because of this novel coronavirus.

It seems like wherever we look, we see another threat. Then I remember the words of the Psalmist when he says the Lord “sent forth his word to heal them.” (Psalms 107: 20) As people of faith we act on that belief, knowing that God blesses our most strenuous endeavors.

You may be aware that today, May 5th, has been designated #GivingTuesdayNow. We are fortunate that two generous longtime supporters of Maryknoll’s mission work have agreed to match up to $20,000 donated by May 7th. You can help us receive this generous donation by making a donation now. Every gift counts and enables us to support the work of the Gospel that continues in 22 countries around the world and to support the older members of our missioner community and those who serve them.

Thank you again for your continued support. I hope you can be generous with us at this very trying time and I pray that God keeps you and your loved ones safe and healthy in this Easter season.
Father Raymond J. Finch, M.M. Sincerely,

    Father Raymond J. Finch, M.M.

    “Abundance overflowing”
View this email in your browser
    Dear Deacon Nguyen,

How you define “abundant life” depends a lot on your point of view. For some people it’s having security, even though we know security can be an illusion. For others it’s about acquiring things as though material objects are the source of lasting joy.

Both of those ideas have little or nothing to do with creating the abundant life you and I know. The deepest and richest abundance only comes in one way: by caring for others—the way Christ did. Obviously, I’m not talking about an economic model! But the most radical form of enrichment that involves the soul. The more we give, the more we receive, the more abundant our lives.

This might seem like an impossible riddle to some. But for people of faith, we know that giving in order to receive is the only way to experience God’s love. Our teacher is Christ himself. His sacrifice on the Cross was the supreme transformational act of all time. We imitate Christ each time we offer sacrifice, too—by setting aside our own needs and finding the time to care for others.

Abundance and sacrifice always seem to work together. The lesson I learned long ago is that people who need help are often the first to volunteer their help. I saw this most vividly during my years in the Altiplano of Peru where families who had the least shared the most in gestures of hospitality and caregiving. These are moments when the abundance of life is never more apparent to me.

Dinh, it’s now more than a month since beginning our struggle with the corona virus, a good time to remember that God’s first and last word for us is always “life.” God the Son came so that we may have life and have it more abundantly—not as solitary travelers separated by social distancing but as loving, caring, and connected builders of the Kingdom on earth. May this week overflow for you with abundance and new life.
Father Raymond J. Finch, M.M. Sincerely yours in Christ,

    Father Raymond J. Finch, M.M.
Prayer for 4th Sunday of Easter
I come before You, Lord God,
with open heart and empty hands
willing to offer all things in return
for the fullness of life You grant
to those who believe in You.

Freely have I received Your grace,
freely help me share Your gifts
    with all I meet today.
You, who gave up everything to come
and dwell with us here on earth
    for love of humankind,
help me to give up all for love of You
and all my brothers and sisters.

From Your riches we have all received
    blessings upon blessings
let Your love overflow through us
to those who call upon You in faith
through Christ, Your Son, and our Lord.

    Amen.

    Dear Deacon Nguyen,

I'm sure you have heard of the saying, “It is better to light a candle than to curse the darkness.” During this time of darkness when we do not know when the pandemic will slow down, we can only light a candle and try to keep positive by sticking together in prayer.

We invite you to listen to the daily Gospel and reflection from Monday through Saturday. Then on Sunday at 10:00 am EST we will be live streaming Mass from our Chapel on our Facebook page.
