MORNING PRAYER (Tuesday 26th April 2022)

YESTERDAY WAS ANZAC DAY: A PRAYER FOR REMEMBRANCE

                                            Ever-living God,

We remember those whom you have

gathered from the storm of war

                   into the peace of your presence;

may that same peace calm our fears,

                             bring justice to all peoples

and establish harmony among the nations,

                           through Jesus Christ our Lord.

                                                                     Amen.

MORNING PRAYER (Thursday 14th April 2022)

Lord Jesus, you are the faithful one of God.

You were committed to the mission given to you by the Father.

You have traced your steps from the early days of your public life.

Constantly you paused to pray and contemplate what was to be

    your responsibility in the world.

May your spirit steady us to follow your way, despite the costs.

    Amen.

    CONFESSION OF SINS

    Together we pray:

Merciful God, help me to personally absorb your unconditional mercy and kindness

Free me from all those things that prevent me from giving myself to you and to others.

Free me to tolerate the failings of others, as you show tolerance to me

Help me to forgive others as You forgive me.

Free me from resentment and guilt.

Christ our Lord came to call sinners into his Father’s kingdom.

Let us now make an act of sorrow in our hearts and resolve to avoid sin in the future.

    I confess to almighty God,

and to you, my brothers and sisters,

    that I have greatly sinned,

in my thoughts and in my words,

    in what I have done and in what I have failed to do;

through my fault, through my fault,

    through my most grievous fault;

therefore I ask blessed Mary, ever-Virgin,

    all the Angels and Saints,

and you, my brothers and sisters,

to pray for me to the Lord our God.

Now, in obedience to Christ himself, let us join in prayer to

The Father, asking him to forgive us as we forgive others.

    Our Father…

    Lord,

    draw near to your servants

who in the presence of your Church

    confess that they are sinners.

Through the ministry of the Church

    free them from all sin

    so that renewed in spirit

they may give you thankful praise.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

    Amen.

MORNING PRAYER (Friday 15th April 2022)

                                              THE EASTER TRIDUUM

    HOLY THURSDAY

THE MASS OF THE LORD’S SUPPER

The various celebrations are not discrete imitations of the historical events that occurred two thousand years ago. Therefore it would be incorrect to focus on the institution of the Eucharist or the ordination of priests at this celebration … the breaking of the bread and the foot washing ritually and symbolically express the fact that true life is to be found in the sacrifice of service.

The New Dictionary of Sacramental Worship John Baldovin SJ

    GOOD FRIDAY

Early sources refer to followers of Jesus gathering in the early centuries and walking down from the Mount of Olives and the Garden of Gethsemane. Then they would have processed through the streets of Jerusalem towards the place of the crucifixion. We have the eye-witness accounts of Egeria, a Spanish pilgrim who came to Jerusalem about three centuries after the death of Jesus and compiled a whole set of historical observations.

These observations and experiences are possibly where the first semblance of the passion narratives and New Testament writing were formed in the first and second centuries. Also the ritual of the Last Supper and the passion accounts of Jesus would have been the sources of the churches’ first liturgies.

Following reforms in the Holy Week Rituals in the 1960s, the congregation were invited to share in Holy Communion reserved from the Mass of The Lord’s Supper celebrated the previous evening.

    EASTER SATURDAY EASTER VIGIL

The Easter Vigil Ritual is dramatic, as the single light representing the light of the Risen Lord is reverently carried into the darkened church. The community lights their tapers from the Easter candle until the whole Church is ablaze with the new light. Here the Exsultet or call to celebrate Jesus' resurrection is proclaimed; then follows a selection of readings that celebrate the marvel of creation as recorded in the Book of Genesis; then follows the account of the people of God led by Moses as recalled in the Book of Exodus. Later some of the Jewish prophets are heard concluding with the readings from the New Testament. At last the Alleluia is heard again followed by the Litany of the Saints.

The renewal of our baptismal vows then takes place with the ritual of sprinkling the congregation with the blessed Easter water. After the great prayer of thanksgiving, the community is invited to share in our Easter communion.

The oldest Preface composed for a Requiem Mass speaks about life after death.

When our mortal bodies lie in death we dare to believe we have reached another dwelling place, for life is changed, not ended.

In dying we share the life of the risen Lord forever.

MORNING PRAYER (Wednesday 13th April 2022)

Lord Jesus, your entry into Jerusalem seems so sad.

The powerful ones looked on with a cynical smirk.

Your naïve followers hoping this was just the

beginning of themselves being the winners.

In the puzzle of life, may we learn to serve,

    not to be served.

    Amen!
