OUR FATHER, WHO ART IN HEAVEN
MORNING PRAYER (Tuesday 1st March 2022)
Dear God,
Today we gather to celebrate the day before Lent begins.
This day is called Shrove Day (Pancake Day).
Shrove Tuesday originally came from the word shrine,
meaning “absolve”. As the last day before Lent, Shrove
Tuesday was a day of self-examination where Christians
would consider what changes to their life of spiritual
growth they would focus on during the Lenten season.
While Shrove Tuesday was a day of self-reflection, it
also had a practical significance too, from which would
would emerge our modern day tradition of pancakes.
In preparation for Lent, some centuries ago, those
observing the fast would use Shrove Tuesday to also
purify and remove from their house any of the items
that they were foregoing for the 40 days of Lent.
God has given us many things.
Let us pray the “Our Father” together to thank him for
all the things we have.
Amen.
