    Dear Deacon Nguyen,

    Diversity—its beauty is a blessing.

    Divisiveness—it’s rampant in today’s world.

The United States boasts that special blessing called diversity. And what better way to acknowledge that than around our nation’s birthday with King David’s celebratory psalm? But unfortunately, our diversity sometimes divides us, and the culprit oftentimes centers on misunderstandings.
“You are my inheritance, O Lord.” “You will show me the path to life, abounding joy in your presence, and the delights at your right hand forever.”
    ~ Responsorial and Psalm 16:11
If one of the biggest difficulties we face as a country—and even within our own family systems—is lack of communication, then affirming our beliefs cultivates the ability to live together in harmony. In other words, if God is our refuge, treasure, sovereign, and counselor, then we’ve inherited everything we need for a peaceful co-existence. The psalmist is full of faith that God has made his destiny secure, that He has measured out pleasant places for him, and that He is fair in allotting his inheritance.

Combine that with a national inheritance that promotes an entrepreneurial spirit, free speech, religious freedom, due process, and ideals for accepting migrants, and we have a formula for the most exquisite cultural and racial mosaic, for the ability to live together cooperatively!

Dinh, our differences enrich us as human beings and we need one another, just as all the pieces in a mosaic need each other to make up the whole of the artistic representation. After all, what beauty is there in a mosaic with only one type of tile?
Father Raymond J. Finch, M.M. Sincerely yours in Christ,
    Father Raymond J. Finch, M.M.
Prayer for 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time
God of our fathers and mothers
    You reveal Yourself through
    the beautiful diversity of birds,
    fish, flowers, and people
with which You populate the world.

Help us to appreciate the wonders
of creation and the myriad faces
making up the amazing mosaic of America.

God of immigrants, exiles, and pilgrims
    may our words or division
    and walls of suspicion cease
to separate us from one another,
    and thus from You.

Help us recognize You in everyone,
    especially those who look, speak,
live, or believe differently than we do.

Help us to cross the borders that divide us
and to welcome all who seek the same freedoms
and opportunities that, through Your grace,
made our nation a shining city on a hill
inviting all to seek liberty and justice for all.

    Amen.
    ~ Father Joseph R. Veneroso, M.M.
