SUNDAY PRAYER AT HOME: EASTER SUNDAY (A)
Hymn (Sing to the Mountains – Bob Dufford)
Sing to the mountains, sing to the sea.
Raise your voices, lift your hearts.
This is the day the Lord has made.
Let all the earth rejoice.
I will give thanks to you, my Lord, etc.
Introduction and Act of Repentance
Leader: Welcome, everyone! Rejoice! This is the day that Jesus, our Brother and Saviour, smashed the chains of death, and left his tomb victorious and glorious. He wants you and me to share his great victory over evil and death. So, we pray to him with the greatest trust:
Lord Jesus, by your living, dying, and rising, you free us from our sins. Lord, have mercy …
Lord Jesus, through your resurrection you empower us to live with you after we die. Christ, have mercy …
Lord Jesus, through your resurrection, you empower us to live and die like you. Lord, have mercy …
All: Glory to God in the Highest…
Opening Prayer
Leader: God our Father and Creator, you have given us this day of joy. This is the day that your Son Jesus rose from death, appeared to certain chosen witnesses, and opened their minds and hearts to what the scriptures had foretold. Fill our hearts with hope, that where Jesus has gone, we may follow. We make our prayer through the same Christ our Lord.
All: AMEN.
A reading from the Acts of the Apostles (10:34,37-43)
This is part of an early sermon given by the Apostle Peter. He announces that the risen Jesus is the Saviour of all who believe in him, and the Judge of the living and the dead.
Reader: ‘Peter began to speak to those assembled in the house of Cornelius.
“You know the message God sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ – he is Lord of all. That message spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John announced: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.
“We are witness to all that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; but God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear, not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead.
“He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead. All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.”
The word of the Lord.
Responsorial Psalm (All)
‘O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his steadfast love endures forever. Let Israel say, “His steadfast love endures forever.”
“The right hand of the Lord is exalted; the right hand of the Lord does valiantly.” I shall not die, but I shall live, and recount the deeds of the Lord.
The stone that the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone. This is the Lord’s doing; it is marvellous in our eyes.’
A reading from the letter of Paul to the Colossians (3:1-4)
By being baptised, we already share in the resurrection of Jesus and live as Easter people.
Reader: ‘If you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth, for you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life is revealed, then you also will be revealed with him in glory.’
The word of the Lord.
A reading from the Holy Gospel According to John (10:1-10)
For two of his first followers, their discovery of his tomb empty, told them that Jesus had risen.
Reader: ‘Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and
the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.” Then Peter and the other disciple set out and went towards the tomb. The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He bent down to look in and saw the linen wrappings lying there, but he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen wrappings lying there, and the cloth that had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen wrappings, but rolled up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; for as yet they did not understand the scripture, that he must rise from the dead.’
The Gospel of the Lord.
Faith Sharing
- Were the friends of Jesus expecting him to show himself among them again? How did it happen?
- What has it been like for you to lose through death, somebody you have dearly loved?
- Do you expect to see them again? Why? How?
Renewal of Baptismal Promises
On this Easter Day we are recognising that not only is Jesus Christ alive now in himself, but he is also alive in us who are celebrating his victory. Easter, then, is also about our resurrection from the dead. It’s about our rising to the best, the most honest, the most transparent, the most authentic, the most
generous, and the most loving ways of living our lives. Let us therefore ask ourselves:
- Do you reject sin, so as to live in the freedom of God’s children?
- Do you reject the glamour of evil, and refuse to be mastered by sin?
- Do you reject Satan, father of sin and prince of darkness?
- Do you believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth?
- Do you believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was born of the Virgin Mary, was crucified, died and was buried, rose from the dead, and is now seated at the right hand of the Father?
- Do you believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting?
Prayer of the Faithful
Leader: Let us pray to God who rescued his dear Son from the darkness of death and brought him into the light of glory. (pause) Lord, hear us… Response: Lord, hear our prayer
Reader: We pray that all followers of Jesus will experience today the joy of his victory over death. (pause) Lord, hear us …
We pray for the men and women that govern us. May the victory of Jesus over evil encourage them in their work for justice, prosperity, and peace. (pause) Lord, hear us …
We pray for one another, that we might overcome our fear of death, by greater trust in the power and love of Jesus to bring us safely home. (pause) Lord, hear us …
We pray for those who do not believe in an after-life. May they too experience the joy of this Easter Day. (pause) Lord, hear us …
We pray for our deceased relatives and friends, and for all the faithful departed, that they may enjoy the light and life, the peace and joy of the risen Jesus. (pause) Lord, hear us …
We pray for our own special needs. (pause) Lord, hear us …
Leader: God our Father, the power of this day drives away all evil, washes away all guilt, restores lost innocence, brings joy to those who mourn, casts out hatred, bestows peace, and humbles human pride. May we experience the power of Easter in our lives, and in all around us. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN.
All: AMEN.
