    Dear Deacon Nguyen,

“First Peoples” or “Native Peoples”… They are a part of the global family we call indigenous. And in many parts of the world their cultures are under threat.

By now I hope you received my mailing about Maryknoll’s ministry among the indigenous people of Indonesia, Tanzania, and Bolivia—and how much good your gift will do. Please support our missions among the indigenous because today their needs are overwhelming.

The Indonesian land of the Asmat in Papua, New Guinea is under threat from two sources: outside logging interests that are cutting down forests; and the effects of climate change. As Father Vincent Cole, M.M. told me—he is our missioner among the Asmat—“Losing their land is the same as losing their identity.”

Your gift will help Father Vince develop micro-businesses linked to the land: farming and craft making. He will also expand his team of lay missioners who work with young and old in need of advocacy and care.

In Tanzania, Father Edward Schoellmann, M.M. ministers to the Watatulu, a semi-nomadic grazing people who are living through a drought that threatens their livelihood. Your gift will help Father Ed build a water system, and develop farming methods that can survive the region’s unpredictable rainfalls.

The Quechua of Bolivia are struggling, too—caught between the comfort of their language and ancient traditions and the need to find work. In Cochabamba, Father Paul Sykora, M.M. offers a tutoring program for Quechua children who have moved from rural areas with their parents. Youngsters learn Spanish so they can keep up with their lessons in school. Your gift will make sure no youngster is left behind.

If the indigenous taught me one thing during my mission years it’s that they are respectful of our earth and know a lot about managing our natural resources. They have always been the guardians of the land—for themselves and the generations to follow.

    We can’t do anything less.

I am asking for your help to care for the indigenous people in our care in more than 20 countries around the world… for the earth...and for people everywhere who suffer under conditions of extreme poverty. Please make your secure donation online at MaryknollSociety.org/nativepeoples.
Father Raymond J. Finch, M.M. Sincerely yours in Christ,
    Father Raymond J. Finch, M.M.
