“Be careful what you pray for” View this email in your browser Dear Deacon Nguyen,
We say it every Sunday at Mass and many other times during the week.““...Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come.” ~ Luke 11:2 But how often do we really think about the words in the Lord’s Prayer?
A full study of Jesus’ teaching on how to pray is the subject of many books; today we delve into only one small part of this glorious communication with our Heavenly Father.
It was revolutionary for a Jewish person to address God as “Father” in Jesus’ time. According to Jewish law and tradition, our Creator’s names are all holy and must be treated with respect; God is written as “G-d”. The Torah prohibits anyone from erasing, destroying or desecrating Yahweh’s name. But Jesus brought the Father near to us through His incarnation. His name is now “Abba”—an intimate term for God—yet it is still hallowed.
And the kingdom? We can either pray for God’s kingdom to come by saying the words automatically from memory or we can think and feel the words as we ask Him to help… We ask God to act, but we also ask God to help us act. And we remember that He is faithful to His promises while pledging to return that faithfulness through the way we live.
Dinh, today we’re challenged to stand in awe as the disciples did when they learned how to pray, to ask as much of ourselves as we do of God, and to seek God’s Kingdom first, for it is not a place but a manner of “becoming” and “being”.Sincerely yours in Christ,
Father Raymond J. Finch, M.M.Prayer for 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time God our Father we pray
as Jesus Your Son
taught us to pray:
that Your kingdom
of peace, justice, love,
mercy, forgiveness, and hope
burst forth upon the earth
like flowers blossom
after a Summer rain.
May our thoughts, words,
deeds, and relationships
reflect Your truth:
we are all created in Your image
and precious in Your eyes.
Give us the courage and strength
to break down any walls or barriers
that separate us from each other
and from You.
Help us free the captive,
heal the sick,
enlighten the blind
defend the oppressed
and rescue the lost
that everything we do proclaims,
“may Your kingdom come!”
